The pandemic had an unexpected effect on this year’s thermoforming parts competition organized by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Thermoforming Division. “The number of entries [in the biennial event] doubled from our last competition in 2019,” said Competition Chair Travis Kieffer. There was nothing surprising about the quality of the parts entered, however, which were “top notch,” in Kieffer’s estimation. The awards were officially handed out at the SPE Thermoforming Division’s conference in Grand Rapids, MI, on Sept. 20 to 22, in several categories, including vacuum forming, pressure forming, and production parts from 3D-printed tooling, a category that was introduced this year.
